BFSG FlyIn Server Upgrade
« on: Sat, 07 Dec 2019, 00:46:32 »
All,

The old server has been creaking for a while - and the OS it was running on is about to become unsupported (like Windows 7 - just saying).

Over the past few days, I've been setting a up new one and hardening it (the first one that was stood up got pwned within three days). It's now live. So...

Actually, you should notice no difference because the name bfsg.game-host.org now points at the new server. The only place where you may have an issue is JoinFS if your connection string consists of two groups of five digits followed by one of four. If that's the case, then you need to replace what's in the "Join" text box with "bfsg.game-host.org:6111" and all should be peachy again.

Note that this change isn't likely to fix the JoinFS visibility issues that you see occasionally - that problem almost certainly rests in the configuration of your network hardware and opening up external connections through your routers.

If you come across any OTHER issues though - please post them in this thread and I'll try to deal with them.

I've worked through the JoinFS question with Barry, and there's a "gotcha" that you need to be careful of. The issue relates to bookmarks if you're using them.

In JoinFS, go to the "View" menu and then select "Bookmarks". Somewhere in the list in the "Name" column there might be the name that appears in the "Join" field of the main dialog when you connect to the server - but it doesn't matter at all what is written in that space. Mine says "BFSG (Production)".

What is important is that the "Address" column on the same row says bfsg.game-host.org:6111. That is "Bravo Foxtrot Sierra Golf (full-stop) Golf Alpha Mike Echo (hyphen) Hotel Oscar Sierra Tango (full-stop) Oscar Romeo Golf (colon) six one one one". To change it, select that row in the Bookmarks dialog and click on the "Edit" button. Then type the address in to the "Address" field (or copy and paste the bold text above) and click OK.

Back in the JoinFS main dialog make sure the correct row is selected in the "Join" dropdown, and click on the "Join" button. All should be good.

Note that the JoinFS instance on the old server is turned off so you're not going to be able to connect to anything if you're looking in the wrong place...

Hi Andy

could you elaborate on the following statement please?

Note that this change isn't likely to fix the JoinFS visibility issues that you see occasionally - that problem almost certainly rests in the configuration of your network hardware and opening up external connections through your routers.

It is something we all seem to struggle with.  We have found simply restarting JoinFS can affect who you see.

Thanks

Phil
