JoinFS Updated to 1.4.25 - on our server too!
« on: Mon, 04 Feb 2019, 22:15:30 »
Please note...

The version on JoinFS on the server has been updated to 1.4.25. This version is incompatible with version 1.4.20 and as such, if you wish to use the server to start your flights, you MUST upgrade.

Pilots using X-Plane will also need to update the X-Plane plugin from the JoinFS settings dialog before starting the X-Plane program.

Is it worth restricting these updates to less frequent releases or once monthly for example?  This is the third one I've done this year

Some people may miss the post and spend ages troubleshooting a problem that is simple wrong version

It's a thought - but what's the real impact?

The program tells you when you start it that there's a new version available, and puts an upgrade link in its status bar until you have actually upgraded. Personally, I'd find that quite annoying (if I used it a lot).

The upgrade process is relatively painless - takes but a few minutes with perhaps an extra step for those of us  who fly X-Plane in the event that the plug-in needs an update.

Happy to listen to opinion though. Would make my job easier  ;)

Personally I think we should stay as is, following stable releases. Some of us fly with other groups and managing to keep many different copies is a pain.

I have removed FSInn, vPilot, PlanG and FSC from my machine.
WHY would I need them?
Why would I pay for them?
What do they ADD to our shared on-lining activity?
Disk space?   Compatibility issues!   Why??

I'm for sharing a proven very successful - and free - product that has been developed by an enthusiast who shares our enjoyment of Simming.
JoinFS and LittleNavMap do EVERYTHING that the older rag-bag of supporting software that we need......whatever we fly.....whatever Sim...
......IF IT IS INSTALLED & CONFIGURED CORRECTLY !
I fully agree with ONLY supporting the STABLE version (although I remain happy to - personally - support & work with.... and voluntarily contribute to...  PM & AB in their future efforts to keep everything up to date for us).

Slightly off topic but FSInn, vPilot and PlanG were all free in the same way joinFS is. I don't know about LNM as I'm a Luddite happily still using PlanG  :P However we've already seen PM give up development on joinFS on at least one occasion due to the effort involved and the lack of remuneration it generates. Will it be around for the long haul? Things look good at the moment but .......

Remember these are effectively crowd funded, no one contributes and the product dies.

not sure of your point there Barry :)  This is not a criticism of JoinFS which is very good.

My point was that it looks like a new version isn't always backwards compatible with older versions.  Which means if you miss the post or you upgrade before the server is ready you may run into problems (usually on flight day along with the other myriad problems we get >:()

I'm humbly suggesting maybe a more controlled and predictable rollout would be beneficial
